I was born in west Cumberland in 1968, grew up in Sheffield and studied at UMIST for a degree in electronic engineering and an MSc in VLSI Systems which in 1993 secured me a position at ARM Ltd, one of the flagship companies of Cambridge's hi-tech boom. I lived in Cherry Hinton before moving to Royston Road, Whittlesford, in the spring of 2000.
In 2005 I married my wife Alena who has for some years has been a post-doctoral researcher at the department of biochemisty at the University of Cambridge, in Dijon, France and previously in Caracas, Venezuela. She has been involved in research into malaria, cancer and neurotramsitters. We have a son Tom who is approaching his second birthday in June 2008.
I left my position at ARM to pursue my musical interests as a saxophonist and a scholar of the music of Duke Ellington. I established my Harmony In Harlem jazz orchestra in 2006. The first ever rehearsal of my jazz orchestra was at Thriplow Village Hall, a pleasant coincidence given that Thriplow forms half the district ward I am contesting, alongside Whittlesford.
My orchestra has performed two charitable concerts so far in 2008. The first at the "B Bar" in central Cambridge which raised money for the The Prospects Trusts, a local charity. The second performance at the William Westley School was to raise money for the school PTA in return for our regular use of the school for rehearsals, and this is likely to be an annual event.
When I moved to Whittlesford in 2000 I volunteered to sit on the Parish Council after being approached by Cllr Tim Stone, then chairman of the Parish Council. I continued this for just under two years. After the birth of our son Tom and my involvement with the William Westley school in connection to my jazz orchestra, we have recently gained many more friends and connections in Whittlesford and it has given life so much more meaning!
